Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United training after missing England’s latest games through injury.

Rashford withdrew from Gareth Southgate’s squad after picking up a knock in United’s FA Cup win over Fulham last weekend.

There have been doubts over whether he would be be fit for United’s trip to Newcastle this weekend, and though he is back running, he faces a race against time.

Players returned to Carrington on Monday with Rashford present after a short holiday.

Rashford took part in a small session away from the main group with no ball work, instead focusing on fitness.

The forward is the Red Devils’ leading goal scorer this season, netting 27 times in 47 games in a run that has seen him return to his best form.

He has, however, now pulled out of five of the last six non-tournament England squads.

Southgate leapt to the defence of Rashford after his latest withdrawal, saying he had no issue with Rashford’s decision and insisting his chances of selection in the future would not be hampered.

‘Once he’s ruled out of the squad, it’s entirely up to him how he spends his time,’ said Southgate ahead of England’s win over Ukraine in reference to Rashford going on holiday.

‘The players don’t get a lot of break. I’m sure our players will be flying off wherever after tomorrow’s game. If they get 48 hours with the schedule as it is, I think they have to take advantage of it.’

United, who are in a fight to finish inside the top four of the Premier League and win what could be a treble of trophies this season, head to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

They will then play host to Brentford on Wednesday next week as the final stretch of the Premier League season gets underway.
