Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have jetted off to Ibiza for a holiday together with their families as they enjoy some rest before August’s Champions League quarter-finals.

The Barcelona duo have been given some time off after the LaLiga season ended last week, which saw the Catalans beaten to the title by rivals Real Madrid.

The Catalan government has advised citizens not to leave Barcelona because of the COVID-19 pandemic but the pair still opted to head for Ibiza.

They aren’t the only Barcelona players who have ignored government advice and taken the opportunity for a holiday, with Gerard Pique and Marc-Andre ter Stegen also leaving the city for a short break.

Ibiza is a regular holiday destination for Messi and Suarez, who also headed there last summer with their families along with Cesc Fabregas, Jordi Alba and their respective wives and children.

Barcelona will hope their break in the sunshine helps to restore the club’s fortunes on the pitch as they prepare for one final pursuit of silverware this season.

The Catalans drew 1-1 with Napoli in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final away in Naples ahead of the return leg on August 8th.

Should they emerge victorious, Barca will face Chelsea or Bayern Munich in the semi-finals, with Bayern the most likely opponent following their 3-0 win in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.

But Napoli won’t have given up hope of causing a shock by beating Barca at the Nou Camp, with the club in turmoil following an outburst from Messi after they lost their league title to Madrid.

Messi accused his team-mates of lacking character and said their Champions League defeats to Roma and Liverpool in recent seasons showed they lacked the mental toughness to compete with the world’s best teams.
