Lewis Capaldi will cover The Chemical Brothers and Noel Gallagher’s hit song Setting Sun in new YouTube series… despite online feud between him and the Oasis frontman

Lewis Capaldi is set to cover The Chemical Brothers and Noel Gallagher’s hit Setting Sun, as part of a new YouTube original series titled Birthday Song.

The singer, 23, will appear in the first episode of the new show, which sees musicians record cover songs of the number one single on the day they were born, it was revealed on Thursday.

Despite their recent feud on social media, which saw the Oasis frontman, 52, slam the Someone You Loved hitmaker’s music for being too melancholic and calling him ‘Chewbacca’, Lewis is more than happy to sing the track.

Speaking to Deadline about the programme, showrunner Luke Hyams said: ‘This allows us to have an artist do something entirely different than what we’ve seen them do before, create a new piece of unexpected music, learn something new about their creative process.

‘Wrapped in that, I was fascinated to hear the early story of an artist. I’m interested in how their parents met, what was going on in the world around the time they were conceived and what their early life was like. This format allows us to do just that.’

He added that YouTube viewers have ‘an incredible appetite’ for Lewis’ music, given he has more than 2 million fans subscribed to his channel.

Last year, Noel sparked a war of words with Lewis in an interview with Radio X – during which he branded him an ‘idiot.’

The High Flying Birds star later compared the singer to Star Wars character Chewbacca and told him to ‘enjoy his 15 minutes’ of fame, while describing his native Scotland as ‘a third world country.’

‘F****** Chewbacca should enjoy his 15 minutes,’ Gallagher told Variety. ‘The greatest day of his life that I slagged him off or called him an idiot.

‘It’s the greatest day of his f****** life so far. He’s just thinking ‘wow’. Well, I know you’re Scottish and all that but f****** hell. It is like a third world country but for f***’s sake, man, you must have had a better day than this. Surely.’

The remarks prompted Capaldi to wear a Chewbacca mask while performing at Glasgow’s TRNSMT Festival, where he dedicated Oasis hit Don’t Look Back In Anger to Noel – who he referred to as ‘dad’.

Before taking to the stage, Capaldi said he’d love to collaborate with Noel, despite their war of words.

‘I’d love to just… me and him get in there,’ he said. ‘He doesn’t like co-rights so probably wouldn’t, but he can write it and I’ll sing it and I’m sure it would be a lovely one.

‘I love him to bits. He’s just bamming it up isn’t he? He loves a bam up, Noel. I too enjoy a bit of a bam up although maybe I wouldn’t call a country a third world one at that but I thought it was funny.’
