Leonardo DiCaprio and his pal Emile Hirsch soak up some sun shirtless at the beach in Malibu

They continued their years-long friendship on screen in last year’s hit film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

And Leonardo DiCaprio, 45, and his old friend Emile Hirsch, 35, met up again on Friday to enjoy a day at the beach together.

The two were spotted relaxing in the sun and cooling down in the surf with friends and Leo’s father George DiCaprio.

Leonardo stripped down for some time in the water with a pair of gray patterned swim trunks.

Emile highlighted his fit physique in a baby blue pair decorated with cacti. 

The two stars were seen walking together into the water to cool down a bit.

While out in the water, they chatted with friends and seemed to be having a great time and beaming widely. 

Despite the ongoing pandemic, which is surging in record numbers throughout the country, only Leo was seen wearing a mask at one point while walking on the beach.

Last year, Leo earned rave reviews for his comic performance in Quentin Tarantino’s love letter to the late-’60s film industry, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

He starred as the fictional actor Rick Dalton, who had been reduced to starring as a villain for hire as his lead work on television dried up following a failed attempt at moving up to film acting.

Dalton was accompanied by his trusty stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), and together the two came dangerously close to the orbit of the Charles Manson and his deranged followers.

Emile played a supporting part as Jay Sebring, the celebrity hair stylist who was murdered along with Sharon Tate by members of the Manson family on August 8, 1969.

In the film, he was clearly still pining for Tate (played by Margot Robbie), who had married the director Roman Polanski and was pregnant with his child at the time of her murder.  

The film was a success with critics and earned an 85% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers calling it Tarantino’s best film in years.

Once Upon A Time was nominated for ten Oscars at the 92nd Academy Awards in February, where it earned two: Best Supporting Actor for Pitt and Best Production Design for its uncanny recreation of Los Angeles circa 1969.

However, Hirsch’s presence in the film was a source of controversy for many critics and viewers.

In February 2015, the Speed Racer star was charged with aggravated assault after he choked the Paramount Pictures executive Daniele Bernfeld at a club in Park City, Utah, during the Sundance Film Festival.

Later that year, Hirsch pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of assault, though he claimed in court that he was inebriated and under the influence of an unnamed stimulant, which may have affected his behavior.

The actor claimed to have no memory of choking Bernfeld until she was unconscious.

He was sentenced to 15 days in jail, along with 90 days of probation.

His sentence also required him to completed 50 hours of community service and pay a fine of $4,750.

In the wake of the Me Too movement and a newfound focus on sexual misconduct in the film industry, many questioned why Hirsch was being given a choice role in a major production so soon after his violent outburst.

In June 2019, The Good Place star Jameela Jamil publicly criticized Hirsch’s involvement in the film, saying he benefited from an ‘intense case of rich white male privilege.’

‘Cool. Emile Hirsch strangled my tiny female best friend until she blacked out at a party in front of dozens of witnesses at Sundance Film Festival (and was convicted) but Tarantino just cast him in a movie.’

Others defended Hirsch for having already served his time, and the actor entered a rehab program after finishing his prison sentence. 

After he had gotten his fill of the water, Leo was seen heading back to the beach to spend time with some of his other friends and family.

The water seems to have weighed down his bathing suit, which dipped low.

The Beach star covered up his shaggy brown hair with an olive and white trucker hat and he pulled on a plain white T-shirt. 

His father George, whose dyed-black hair had grown out during the pandemic to reveal his white roots, had on a blue Hawaiian-style shirt and salmon-colored shorts.

The actor’s father carried on a conversation with him under a large beach umbrella as he stared out at the water and took a puff on his ever-present vape pen. 

George has his own connections to the entertainment industry, as he worked in the world of underground comics in his early days.

He was also instrumental in helping his son go through scripts when he was younger and steering him toward some of the early projects that established his name.  

Although Leo got in plenty of time with Emile and his other male friends and family, his girlfriend Camila Morrone seemed to be missing from the outing.

He and the 23-year-old model and actress were first linked in late 2017, and the relationship has now become one of the longest for the Wolf Of Wall Street star.

Camila, whose mother Lucila Polak had a years-long relationship with Leo’s Once Upon A Time costar Al Pacino, has recently turned her focus from modeling to acting.

In 2018, she played one of the lead roles in the comedy Never Goin’ Back, and she expanded last year with an acclaimed lead role in the indie drama Mickey And The Bear, along with a supporting role in this year’s musical comedy Valley Girl. 

Last month, Leonardo signed on to costar with Jennifer Lawrence in the upcoming Adam McKay film Don’t Look Up.

The Netflix film already features a murderers’ row of actors including Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Matthew Perry, Timothee Chalamet and Jonah Hill.

Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi are also set to have cameo appearances in the picture.

McKay will write, direct and co-produce the film about two low-level astronomers (Leo and Jennifer) who identify an asteroid heading toward Earth.

The two embark on a media tour to warn people about the catastrophic collision that could destroy all life on earth in six months, but no one seems to believe them.

The film will begin shooting later this month, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It marks the first time the Leonardo has starred in a film to be released exclusively on Netflix.
