John Mayer lampoons Gal Gadot’s celebrity Imagine compilation that was panned as tone-deaf: ‘I totally misunderstood the assignment!’

John Mayer parodied the ill-received celebrity Imagine compilation Gal Gadot and others took part in.
The 42-year-old singer-songwriter, on his streaming Current Mood show Sunday, claimed that he was asked to lend his talents to the compilation.
‘So this week, Gal Gadot and a bevy of other celebrities released a rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine,’ the Daughters artist said. ‘It went far and wide across the internet.’

Mayer said he was confused by the request, thinking he was asked to sing a different song of the same title.
‘I have to come clean about something: They actually asked me to be a part of this and I totally misunderstood the assignment, and thought they wanted me to sing Imagine by Ariana Grande from her 2019 smash-hit album Sweetener.’
He then added snippets of the video – with himself edited into the mix, singing the lyrics to the Grande song.
He said ‘they were nice enough to send over a cut, take a look.’

The Waiting on the World to Change artist noted that Grande’s songs aligned with contemporary issues, adding, ‘By the way, everything Ariana sings about in this song sure sound good right about now.’
He advised fans to try and keep their spirits up amid the troubling times of an international pandemic.
‘Smile when you can, laugh when the opportunity comes up,’ he said.
