Joey King inks first-look TV deal with Hulu after critically-acclaimed performance in The Act

Joey King has become a star of the streaming world, with memorable performances in several Netflix and Hulu originals.

And the Emmy nominee is getting ready to take on a new role behind the camera, with a historic career move.

She recently inked a first-look TV deal with Hulu, as she will produce some new shows for the platform, in which she will also star.

At only 20 years old, it makes King the youngest person to strike such a deal with a streaming network, according to Deadline.

It comes after her critically-acclaimed performance in last year’s Hulu limited series The Act, which earned her nominations at the Emmy Awards and Golden Globes. 

She starred alongside Patricia Arquette in the true crime story as Gypsy Blanchard, a young woman who killed her abusive mother Dee Dee, who suffered from Munchausen by Proxy.

King recently told Access: ‘I was actually kind of going through it a little bit after I finished up The Act. I kind of sunk into this weird depression from finishing that show. 

‘Because part of me was so used to being in that weird, dark headspace. And then, all of the sudden, it was just gone, and I was expected to just return to normal life.’

She’s next attached to executive produce and star in A Spark of Light, based on the 2018 novel by Jodi Picoult.

Set at Sony Pictures TV, the limited series will be executive produced by Doug Robinson and Allison Greenspan of DRP, as well as Picoult, Dan Spilo and Jamie King.

The native Angeleno also recently executive produced and starred in the teen romantic comedy The Kissing Booth 2, which premieres Friday on Netflix.

King has been starring in films and television since she was a kid, but she broke out with Netflix’s original teen movie fandom, after starring in the original in 2018.
