Jane Fonda reveals fears for her children over future of the planet

Jane Fonda has candidly discussed her fear for the future and her children as she shares concerns that there may not be anything left for them.

The 82-year-old actress said she believes the current damage to democracy is ‘beyond words’, as she revealed she is worried there won’t be a future for her children to be ‘politically active in’.

Discussing her own dedication to activism with Harper’s Bazaar UK, Jane revealed she will focus on addressing climate change until the end of her life because that is the thing that ‘affects everything else’.

She told the magazine: ‘The importance of voting is to get candidates in office who are brave enough to stand up and do what’s right. The damage done to our democracy institutionally is beyond words.’

‘I’ve been involved in a lot of issues in the past. I’m a woman so I care about women’s issues, but right now and until I die the issue will be the climate because it effects everything else.’

Jane went on to say she is concerned about the planet she will leave behind and said: ‘My concern is, is there going to be a future? I have kids and grandkids and I think, when they grow up are they going to be engaged? 

‘Are they going to be able to breathe? Will the children have a future to be politically active in? That’s all that matters.’

‘I don’t have much of a future left, older people don’t have much of a future. Kids have their whole lives in front of them – and they see what we’ve done to their futures and they’re righteously angry.’

Jane was arrested by U.S. Capitol Officers earlier this month during a ‘Fire Drill Fridays’ climate change protest in Washington D.C.

It was the fourth time she had been arrested in as many weeks for protesting climate change and she discussed her latest experience during an episode of The View.

Jane revealed that conditions inside her holding cell were ‘not good for old bones like mine on a metal slab’ and added it was sad seeing, ‘so many people in jail for poverty and racism and mental health issues’.

The film star moved to DC to carry out her weekly Fire Drill Fridays action, where they chose to focus on a different aspect of climate change each week.

She said: ‘Every week we focused on a different aspect of the climate crisis and then we engaged in civil disobedience and risked getting arrested. After two months we realised it was catching on and we tapped into something that was important.’

‘I wanted to show that old folks could be involved as well. I knew that people would say, well my god, she’s 82. If she can do it, why can’t I get out there? And it worked.’

Jane also spoke about what drives her to be an activist, and said: ‘What’s at stake. Whether there is a future that is worth living in is at stake and if that’s not a motivation, I don’t know what is.

‘I want to be able to get to the end of my life and feel that I have done my best.’ 

The Grace and Frankie star also revealed it makes her angry that the people in power ‘won’t admit’ that the cause of climate change is the use of fossil fuels.

‘So many people that have power to do something, but won’t admit the cause of the climate crisis which is fossil fuels. 

‘What makes me furious is so many people talk about windmills and turbines, but they don’t talk about fossil fuels because it’s controversial. Grow some balls, the future is at stake.’
