Quids in! ‘Incredibly rare’ gold coin made for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee goes on sale for £50,000 on eBay

An ‘incredibly rare’ coin made to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee has gone on sale for £50,000 online.

The late monarch – who passed away at the age of 96 last September – celebrated 70 years on the throne in June 2022.

To celebrate the occasion, Hattons of London created just 5,999 coins as part of their collector’s item range.

In a nod to the 70-year anniversary, the coin was made using platinum gold, a unique alloy of 22 carat gold, and two carats of platinum.

The coin features the Queen’s side profile on one side and an illustration of the goddess Artemis on the reverse.

While one side features the traditional Latin that appears on all coins, Hattons of London paid tribute to the Queen’s ‘unbreakable leadership’ on the other.

What’s more, the designers also included the year in which the coin was made.

Eight months on from the Jubilee, one of the coins – which was purchased for £78.99 – has now gone up for sale on eBay for a staggering £50,000.

‘Some happen once a decade, others maybe once a lifetime, others only once a century.

‘In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch ever to reach a Platinum Jubilee.

‘To commemorate an event of this magnitude, it requires a gold sovereign coin that will also “stand the test of time”.

‘Even putting to one side the significance of the event they celebrate; this is amongst the most highly significant one-eighth sovereign coins ever released.

‘It will stand apart in the same way Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee does.’

Last May, the Royal Mint unveiled their largest ever coin to celebrate the historic event.

With a diameter of 8.6 inches and made from 33lb of gold, the magnificent coin took 400 hours to make.
