Hit-and-run driver fleeing police kills young woman stood near bus stop

Shocking moment a young mother is killed by speeding hit-and-run driver escaping police – as she is flung 20 feet into the air and lands in front of horrified onlookers at London bus stop

  • Police signalled a vehicle to pull over but it sped off and hit a woman in her 20s
  • The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene in Brixton Hill last night
  • Police said officers had not been pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash

This is the shocking moment a young mother is mown down by a racing hit-and-run car as the driver escapes police.

The victim, 20, is catapulted 20 feet in the air as she is struck by the car and horrified onlookers rush to help her at 9.45pm yesterday.

She was trying to cross the road behind a double decker bus at Brixton Hill, South London, and seems to freeze as she sees the car hurtling down the road towards her – before she is flung across the road.

A clearly traumatised man stood at the bus stop on the other side of the road walks in the opposite direction as her body lands in a crumpled heap in front of him.

As the driver speeds away from the scene, people try to help resuscitate the woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness told MailOnline: ‘It was absolutely awful. We couldn’t believe what happened.

‘That poor woman was sent flying across the road. The car didn’t even stop for a second.

‘A wing mirror came off the car and went flying up the road. It all happened so quickly. The car was just a blur.

‘People tried to help her but she had already passed away.’

The shocking CCTV, taken from a nearby newsagent, was given to MailOnline in a bid to help trace the driver of the black car.

Police are in the process of informing the victim’s next of kin and the Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.

Photos from the scene show a tent erected outside a bus stop near a Nisa Local where it is understood the car struck the woman.

In a statement, a Met spokesperson said: ‘Police signalled for a car to stop and it failed to do so. The car sped off from police and was then involved in a collision with a pedestrian at approximately 21:45hrs on Wednesday 19 February on Brixton Hill.

‘The car did not stop at the scene. The car was found abandoned nearby and enquiries are ongoing to trace the occupants. ‘A woman in her twenties died at the scene. ‘Officers are in the process of informing all her next of kin.

‘The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed as is routine.’

Buses in the area were apparently all stationary with their lights off, following the incident, according to someone at the scene.
