Gogglebox’s Sophie Sandiford promises to leave Debenhams ‘with a smile’ as she is among thousands losing their jobs amid store closures

She is best-known for starring on Gogglebox alongside her brother Pete.

And Sophie Sandiford has opened up about losing her job at Debenhams amid store closures in a candid Instagram post on Wednesday.

The Blackpool reality star, 24, is among thousands whose jobs are at risk after the retailer confirmed it was going into liquidation after 242 years of trading.

But despite the bad news, Sophie has promised her 290,000 Instagram followers that she will keep ‘smiling’.

Sharing a snap of herself and a colleague, she posed by the exit sign of the department store and struck a fun pose in front of Christmas balloon decorations.

She wore a green T-shirt and a black skirt and styled her brunette tresses slicked across her shoulders in the playful snap.

The Gogglebox star also sported a patterned face mask and wore a staff lanyard around her neck as she tried to stay in good spirits.

Alongside the snap, she penned: ‘We might be going but we are going with a smile #debenhams’ 

Her fans immediately flocked to express their sorrow amid the store closures, with other Debenhams workers also explaining that they were in the same boat as Sophie.

One follower said: ‘Feel so sad for everyone loosing their jobs, stay strong x’ (sic)

While another penned: ‘So sorry for everyone being made redundant’

And one Debenhams worker wrote: ‘Let’s make this a good Christmas, I’m a debenhams colleague too!’ (sic)

Sophie’s revelation comes a day after it was announced that Debenhams are running a 70 per cent off pre-Christmas clearance sale to clear stock in its remaining 124 stores amid the liquidation.

Final efforts to save the retailer from closure unfortunately failed, meaning that an estimated 12,000 employees are expected to lose their jobs.

Sophie had previously expressed her sorrow at people ‘losing their jobs’ during the Covid-19 pandemic, breaking down in tears on Gogglebox last month.

She watched Boris Johnson’s televised broadcast announcing a second lockdown, which lasted for four weeks until December 2, and quickly burst into tears.

Realising his sister had become upset, Pete, 26, asked Sophie: ‘Are you all right?’

To which the retail worker replied: ‘It’s just sad, innit, it’s just s**t for everybody.

‘It just gets even worse and more people are going to lose their jobs and things like that. It’s just awful.’

He told her: ‘Don’t be upset kid. Because you’ll set me off.’
