It comes after Ewan recently revealed that he had to knock on doors and hitch lifts in Patagonia after his electric motorbike ran out of battery during Long Way Up filming.

The Trainspotting star, 48, travelled from the top of South America to Los Angeles from September until December with Charley Boorman, it took place September to December.

Ewan has previously filmed two other road trip documentaries with his The Serpent’s Kiss co-star, 53, called Long Way Round in 2004 and Long Way Down in 2007.

Yet on their latest expedition the two actor pals were let down by their electric motorbikes and they had to knock on random people’s doors to camp in their gardens or charge their vehicles from their homes.

Ewan admitted that he even had to be towed a few times, which resulted in him holding onto a car’s pillar as he was dragged along.

The Birds of Prey star said: ‘This time we went on electric motorcycles because we wanted to be part of that new wave of transportation. It proved to be amazing and quite tricky at the same time. The charging is the issue because there is no real infrastructure for charging in for example Patagonia.

‘We’d just knock on people’s doors and asked if you could plug them in. They let us and we’d camp in their garden and sometimes it would blow their fuses because we had two bikes plugged in at the same time, which was embarrassing.

‘We’d have to go and knock on their doors down say I’m terribly sorry. Then we plug one in.’

Ewan sweetly added: ‘People were so generous and lovely about it. Sometimes we’d ride all morning and then if we stopped to look round town we’d find somewhere to plug in like a restaurant or a cafe or something.’

Asked on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon if there were ever any issues with power on the electric motorbikes, he continued: ‘They are totally electric so there is no gas. If you’re lucky you’re going downhill.

‘The truth is, I got towed a couple of times. I was the only one that ran out. Charley never ran out of juice and he’ll tell you that he is a better rider than me, maybe that’s the case.

‘I ran out a couple of times and you just hold onto a car. If you open the back windows and front windows have a car you can get your arm round the pillar and then you just muscle along like that for a while.’

Ewan discovered his ‘towing technique’ from his first ever visit to New York City where he helped out a Hell’s Angels.

He revealed: ‘The first time I saw that done was in New York City when I was in my 20s and I was in the back of a yellow cab when a Hell’s Angels guy, who had run out of gas or his bike had broken down.

Not ideal! 'We'd just knock on people's doors and asked if you could plug them in. They let us and we'd camp in their garden and sometimes it would blow their fuses because we had two bikes plugged in at the same time, which was embarrassing' he said (pictured in 2007)

‘He clattered into the side, put his arm around the pillar and shouted out the address of the Hell’s Angels’ clubhouse to the driver. He didn’t ask any questions and just drove him there.

‘I was just sitting in the back looking. I think Hell’s Angels owe me $5.26 To this day.’

Ewan has been busy promoting his latest film, Birds of Prey, which stars his girlfriend Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Australian actress Margot Robbie as its lead character Harley Quinn.

There is no set air date for Long Way Up but it is due to kick off in the spring time.
