Emma Stone is set to star in the upcoming film Poor Things.

The 32-year-old actress is teaming up with director Yorgos Lanthimos – who she worked with on The Favourite – for a movie adaptation of the novel by Alasdair Gray which was influenced by the 1818 novel Frankenstein.

She will be playing the role of Bella Baxter who is described as a ‘volatile, oversexed, emancipated woman and a female Frankenstein.’

In the twisted thriller, Stone’s character drowns herself to escape her abusive husband and has her brain replaced by that of her unborn child.

The project has also tapped The Favourite screenwriter Tony McNamara and is looking to begin production in late 2021 with eyes on a 2022 release.

A story plot that is perhaps a bit unsettling for Stone who is expecting her first child with husband Dave McCary, she will be able to harness all the motherly emotions by the time the film begins shooting.

In a 2018 interview with Interview Magazine Yorgos spoke about his somewhat bizarre body of work which includes The Lobster.

‘I do enjoy awkwardness. I think it’s an important feeling for people that maybe generates some kind of thirst to wonder about things. As an audience member myself, I love to be in a position where I’m trying to figure out what I am supposed to feel, or if what I’m feeling is appropriate or not.’

Not the only take on the story of Frankenstein, Scarlett Johansson is set to star in Bride which aims to portray a ‘gender-bending’ exploration of the classic character.

Gloria filmmaker Sebastián Lelio is set to direct the movie, and is co-writing it with Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo.

In a statement, Scarlett spoke about stepping in the role of a ‘Franken-femme’.

‘It is long overdue for Bride to step out of the shadow of her male counterpart and stand alone. Working alongside Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum, Sebastian and I are extremely excited to emancipate this classic anti-heroine and reanimate her story to reflect the change we see today.’

The plot follows a woman who was created as an ‘ideal wife,’ ultimately deciding to reject her creator and flee into a world that regards her as a monster, before finding herself.
