‘We didn’t fancy each other at all!’ Ellie Goulding admits it ‘wasn’t love at first sight’ with Caspar Jopling and confesses she ‘kissed quite a few frogs’ before meeting her husband

Ellie Goulding has confessed she was ‘wooed’ by her husband Caspar Jopling and the pair had ‘nothing in common’ when they first met.

The singer spoke out on her chequered love life during her appearance on fellow chart star Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast.

Speaking about their first meeting in 2016, Ellie admitted ‘it wasn’t love at first sight’ as the couple struggled to find any common ground.

Ellie, 33, revealed she met art dealer Caspar, 28, at a dinner thrown for her by a friend following her Jingle Bell Ball performance in late 2016.

There are long-standing rumours that it was the couple’s mutual friend Princess Eugenie who set them up.

‘It’s not a particularly exciting story, sadly. It wasn’t a love at first sight thing at all,’ she told Jessie. ‘We didn’t fancy each other at all. We were just sat next to each other at dinner.’

Ellie explained that she wasn’t feeling well and wasn’t even keen on going to the dinner where she would meet her future husband.

‘I was feeling really rough. I had terrible bronchitis at the time and I was really ill – the most ill if been in ages. All I wanted to do was go to bed after the show and I went to this dinner that my friend had kindly put on for me.’

‘And I was sat next to Caspar and he was from a big farming family and I talked about how I was vegan. And he talked about how much he loved meat: beef and chicken and lamb and whatever else. So we literally had nothing in common.’

Ellie admitted though that despite less than romantic first impressions ‘he wooed me basically. We ended up just going on dates. He works in art so he took me to art galleries and stuff, and now we’re married.’

The couple got engaged in 2017 after Caspar proposed while the couple were doing a puzzle at home, before they married in a lavish ceremony at York Minster in August 2019.

During the podcast chat, Ellie also admitted that it took her awhile to find true love.

The star had a series of high profile romances before meeting Caspar, dating Niall Horan, Radio 1 DJ Greg James, actor Jeremy Irvine, DJ Skrillex and McFly bassist Dougie Poynter.

There were also rumoured relationships with Ed Sheeran and even Prince Harry.

‘That sounds harsh but that’s the best way to say it because I did have a few relationships before Caspar that I thought at the time were amazing.’

‘But I realised through all this – not to go super deep – that actually, I was perhaps not quite myself – which makes sense with everything going on and whatever’s happened over the past 10 years.

‘So, therefore I perhaps had some relationships that were not what I thought they were. But when I met Caspar I just knew.’
