Isle of Wight Police warned drivers about the disruption caused in a Facebook post on Monday.

They said: ‘Our ARV/colleagues have had a busy afternoon.

‘They currently are dealing with this vehicle on Kite Hill in Wootton so please bear this in mind when you are passing through this way as the traffic might be slightly slower moving until this vehicle is recovered.

‘This driver was trying to remove a spider from his vehicle at the time of this incident.

‘We are glad to say the driver only has minor injuries from this incident but as always please keep your eyes on the road as there are lots of distractions around at this time of year.’

Many people saw the funny side and commented spider puns and told similar stories.

Bronnie Paterson said a similar thing had happened to her when she was waiting to turn at some traffic lights.

When she noticed the spider she ‘leapt out and was jumping about like a looney’ before a ‘very kind policeman’ in the other lane helped her.

‘Nice to see you’ve shared this on the web,’ commented Kevin Saunders.

‘Bet the spider freaked out when he saw that post coming,’ jabbed Gordon Pressey.

Tracy Gard made a reference to the English comedian Jasper Carrott who often joked about funny insurance claims.

‘I’d love to see the insurance claim form, sounds like one for Jasper Carrott (showing my age now I suppose),’ she wrote.
