Denise Van Outen has revealed she was in so much pain trying to perform on Dancing On Ice after her shoulder fracture that she came off the ice and vomited.

The star had to pull out of the series on Wednesday, after having the accident during training.

And talking to The Sun about what happened, she revealed: ‘I came off after that show and vomited, and I nearly passed out because I was in so much pain.’

Denise appeared on Sunday’s second show of the series, but performed in a group number with her arm in a sling.

She spent the performance sitting down while her pro partner Matt Evers pushed her around.

‘I did that show on paracetamol. If I’d taken a strong painkiller they would consider you intoxicated,’ she said. ‘I wouldn’t have a whisky and go on the ice, so I couldn’t take a painkiller.

‘It made me realise I was made of tough stuff.’

The presenter, 46, shared an Instagram statement telling fans she’d withdrawn the show after being told by doctors the injury would leave her severely limited in training.

Denise will be replaced by retired Olympic gymnast Amy Tinkler, 21, who will make her ice debut this Sunday alongside pro Joe Johnson.

In the post, Denise explained that doctors discovered she had three bone fractures in her shoulder which meant she’d be unable to perform any lifts or solo skating.

She wrote: ‘GUTTED! If you’ve been watching @dancingonice you will be aware that just over a week ago I had a nasty fall and injured my shoulder.

‘I managed to skate my first dance with @themattevers on the live show through a gritted smile because the pain was unbearable.

‘I’ve tried as hard as I can to carry on because I love the show and the amazing team in front and behind the cameras.

‘Initially we thought with rest I could make a return to the ice, but a recent MRI scan has shown that I have three bone fractures as well as a partial dislocation. OUCH! No wonder I’ve been in agony.’

Denise continued: ‘I won’t be able to do any lifts, tricks or solo skating on the show due to my injury. I’m going to bail out gracefully with my DOI bling sling.

‘@themattevers has been the most incredible support and skate partner (a true friend) and I’m so grateful for his expertise in teaching me (ice virgin) the basics.

‘I just wish I was well enough to learn all the fabulous tricks my injury won’t allow me to do.

‘Chair dancing on Ice with a massive pie won’t get us points on the leaderboard. I’m actually proud of what I’ve achieved (not much, lowest scores so far).

‘If you don’t mind I’m going to give myself a couple of points for bravery for doing cartwheels on Ice at 46 with broken bones.

‘I wish all the celebs, pros and judges the best of luck for the rest of the series. I’m rooting for you all. Bunch of legends.’

Denise’s professional partner Matt said: ‘Denise has worked so incredibly hard these past few months and I’m devastated that she’s unable to show everyone what a beautiful skater she’s become.

‘It’s sad that the competition must end now for both Denise and I but it’s most important that she takes the time to heal and recover. I loved our time on the ice together and I love the wonderful friendship that we will always have.

‘I’m gutted to have Denise leave the show and equally gutted that last Sunday’s hug will be my last for a while.’

‘They are both much loved members of the Dancing On Ice family and we’d like to thank them for their hard work, from the moment they began training through to the joyful performances they brought to the show.

‘We wish Denise all the very best as she now takes some time to make a full recovery.’

Despite bidding farewell to the show, Denise found humour in her departure, as she posted a meme of her performance alongside footballers Harry Kane, Sergio Aguero and André Gomes writhing on the floor in agony.

She penned the caption: ‘Girl power! Broken bones and I kept on smiling.’

Denise’s departure means bronze medallist Amy will perform this weekend alongside her professional partner Joe Johnson.

The gymnast earned 3rd place for Great Britain in Floor at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and also received a bronze for the Team competition at the 2015 World Champions.

After sitting out any competitions in 2019 due to injury, Amy retired from professional gymnastics in January 2020.

Pro skater Matt went to grab her, but she slipped from his grasp and tumbled onto the ice. While in another shot, a few moments later, she is seen being tended to by a medic, rink-side.

She was rushed to hospital and an X-ray revealed she had dislocated her left shoulder and damaged her tendons.

Despite the injury, which came just three days before the first live show, Denise and Matt still took to the ice for their first performance, earning a score of just 19.5 out of 40 which left them bottom of the leaderboard.

Speaking about how she was feeling, Denise told hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: ‘It’s really sore, but because of the adrenaline it’s alright. I’m more concerned I haven’t shaved my armpits for four days!’

The pair were saved by the public vote meaning they were due to skate in Musicals Week on Sunday.

TOWIE narrator Denise initially revealed the news of her injury to The Sun, stating: ‘I’ve taken a few tumbles since we started training but with this one I knew immediately it wasn’t good.’

Following the assessment at the studio rink at Bovingdon Airfield, Hertfordshire, she was taken to A&E where she had an emergency X-Ray done.

The procedure revealed she had partially dislocated her left shoulder and damaged her tendons, while she was also badly bruised.

According to the publication, Denise was advised to rest in order to recover and help improve her chances of making her debut.

Denise claimed she couldn’t move her shoulder much following the injury and felt it was ‘touch and go’ whether she could skate before Sunday, though she said she is having ongoing physio.

She added that she and Matt have changed their routine so that she didn’t put too much strain on her shoulder.

Despite being a West End star, with professional dance training and prior experience competing in a live TV show following her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, Denise previously admitted that she was still ‘petrified’ of doing Dancing On Ice.

She explained: ‘You would not believe it – I would fall over from standing talking but you do get used to it. I am less bruised now, which is good. I am less likely to fall than I was three months ago.

‘I have always been petrified of being on the ice and having an injury and falling. I have fallen over in most of my sessions.

‘I was so nervous when I was first on the ice that my whole body would tense and then I would keep falling over.

‘I am trying to stay relaxed and not think about injuries so much because you can never predict what you’re going to happen when you’re on ice.

‘I hope I can get through the competition and not be taken over by injury. It is scary.’
