Coronation Street’s Ryan Thomas speaks up about finding fatherhood ‘intense’

Ryan Thomas reveals he’s finding fatherhood ‘intense’ and lauds fiancée Lucy Mecklenburgh… as he admits he didn’t appreciate it enough the first time round

Coronation Street’s Ryan Thomas has admitted that he has been finding fatherhood intense with his newborn son as he didn’t fully appreciate it the first time round. 

The former soap opera star, 36, has three-month-old son Roman with fiancee Lucy Mecklenburgh, and 11-year-old daughter Scarlett with ex Tina O’Brien. 

He is now raising his baby boy in lockdown but has risen to the challenge.

In an interview with The Sun, the actor said: ‘It’sintense not being able to have anyone else to hold the baby even for 10 minutes while you have a cup of tea’. 

Ryan then reflected on how he has taken a different approach to fatherhood, admitting that he had a completely different experience of parenthood this time around. 

He reasoned:  ‘I was young and naive when I had Scarlett and I didn’t really appreciate it the way I do now. I have a different outlook now. But, you know, there’s no right or wrong time for parenthood. 

‘I’m just at a very different place in my life compared to back then – it was 11 years ago, and so in a lot of ways this feels like the first time all over again.

He said that when he first became a father in his early 20s he was too naive and didn’t appreciate the experience whereas he now as ‘a different outlook’. 

Ryan added: ‘I’m not working at the moment so I’m living and breathing what happens in our house and it’s just incredible what a woman can do. 

‘To go through the pregnancy, the birth, learning to feed, it’s really inspiring to see.’ 

He said that the hardest part of lockdown has been the fact that Scarlett, who lives in Manchester with her mother, wasn’t allowed to see Roman until he was a month old.  

Ryan’s candid comments came after Lucy detailed her rollercoaster emotions as she navigates life as a new mum during the coronavirus lockdown.

During a recent appearance on Lorraine, she said: ‘Do you know what it has been really tough

‘The first few weeks for me everyone said when I was pregnant people can come around and help, hold him while you nap, cook you dinner.’
