Chris Ramsey’s wife Rosie brands her miscarriage ‘the worst thing ever’

Chris Ramsey’s wife Rosie has discussed the details of her 2018 miscarriage – admitting the tragedy is the ‘worst thing that’s ever happened in her life’.

The author and podcaster appeared on Vicky Pattison’s new podcast, The Secret To:, during which she admitted she was determined to speak openly about her heartbreak so she could help other women.

Rosie, neé Winter, has been married to Chris, 33, since July 2014 and they share a four-year-old son Robin, who she spoke about during the chat, while also laying bare details of lockdown in the Ramsey house and how they have coped.

Truth: Chris Ramsey’s wife Rosie has discussed the details of her 2018 miscarriage – admitting the tragedy is the ‘worst thing that’s ever happened in her life’

In August 2018, Chris announced that Rosie has suffered a miscarriage at 12 weeks pregnant and admitted the ‘cruellest thing’ about the loss was that Rosie still had a baby bump, after her body failed to realise she had suffered a Blighted Ovum.

A blighted ovum is a condition in which a fertilized egg implants in the uterine wall but the embryo fails to develop, usually due to chromosomal abnormalities.

After the tragedy, Rosie also shared an image of her hand in hospital and added a caption reading: ‘I was admitted into hospital a few days later to start the procedure. It was awful. Cramping, vomiting, fainting, fever, really just not nice…

‘After 5 rounds of tablets over a course of 20 or so hours the doctors told me it hadn’t worked as effectively as they’d hoped. I was then taken to surgery to have everything removed. It is now finally all over.’

‘I feel emotionally and physically exhausted. I have so much sympathy for other couples who have/are going through this as I never knew it entailed so much heartache.’

On the podcast, Vicky said: ‘Rosie, I think one of the things I love so much about you, and I don’t want to finish the podcast without talking about it…

‘Is how transparent and genuinely honest you are, even with the things that are slightly hard in your life and that’s admirable…

‘A couple of years ago I remember bumping into you in an airport, and you were dead excited telling us you are expecting a baby and things didn’t work out?’

In typically candid style, Rosie, who shares a podcast with Chris called S**gged Married Annoyed, said: ‘I had a miscarriage. I found out at the 12 week scan I’d actually lost the baby, it’s called a blighted ovum which is a missed miscarriage…

‘The baby passed away at about 7 or 8 weeks but I still had the pregnancy sack inside so my body still thought I was pregnant but there was no baby there…

‘Honestly, I don’t want to sound dramatic but one of the worst things that’s ever happened in my life. You hear about women when you get to a certain age.’

On being aware of situations, Rosie went on: ‘When I was in my twenties, my friends and family weren’t really trying for babies. But when you’re in your thirties when you get that little bit older, you hear about miscarriages all the time…

‘And before I’d had mine I used to hear about them and I’d think, oh that’s really horrible. But then you’d crack on and you wouldn’t think about it again. But honestly, when it happens to you it’s really awful…

‘As soon as you find out you’re pregnant you think up this whole baby’s life, it’s happening to you. And even a miscarriage at 4 weeks can just be devastating, because it’s a long time. Even a week is a long time for your thoughts to run away with you and think up this babies life.’

Rosie revealed her fans and followers noticed her absence when she was mourning, as she said: ‘So it’s just hard and I was really active on social media at the time and I wasn’t on for a week and everyone was like, are you ok?…

‘You know when you haven’t been on and you get the messages like, are you alright? And me and Chris chatted about it and I was like, I think I’m just going to tell people because I’m like that anyway. I’m very heart on my sleeve…

‘I don’t really have many secrets as such, I’m very like this has happened but I just thought I’m going to tell people and it’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s happened to 1 in 4 women. And the response we got was massive and loads of people were telling me about their experiences and it really helped….

‘Selfishly for me it was a bit like therapy. Hearing about all these other people who had gone through it and then hearing people who were like, I’ve got another child after mine. So it was quite positive and really helped us personally’.

When Vicky asked about her relationship with Chris, Rosie said: ‘Oh gosh, do you know what? Pre-lockdown I’d have told you it’s absolutely wonderful, love him so much! Thirteen weeks in I wanna rip his face off if I’m honest! Haha!…

‘It still has its nice bits, he’s a little lamb, he’s no bother. He’s dead canny and because people just know the Chris on stage and you know him personally, but he’s got his little hang-ups and anxiety, all that kind of stuff…

‘Which I think just makes him better at what he does. Because if he didn’t have them things I don’t think he’d be as good at his job. He’s just dead nice!…

‘I can actually sit back and be like, I have a nice marriage. I’m really chuffed, we’ve been together now coming up to our 6 year wedding anniversary this year.’

What causes a ‘blighted ovum’?

Miscarriage happens for many reasons and a ‘blighted ovum’ is one description given to a pregnancy loss where the baby stopped growing very early on and either never developed to a point where it could be seen on scan, or over time it was absorbed, leaving just the pregnancy sac.

There are no particular implications for this type of miscarriage as compared to other ones where bleeding is more common or an embryo is clearly identified.

Miscarriage happens most often because there was a mismatch of the genetic material at the time of conception – due to nothing more than bad luck.

Unfortunately human reproduction is actually quite inefficient and up to half of conceptions will never make it.

The important thing you need to remember is that it wasn’t your fault. You don’t miscarry because you were overactive, didn’t rest enough or were stressed.

It wasn’t the bottle of wine before you knew you were pregnant. It’s just down to bad luck. Most women who have a miscarriage go on to have a healthy pregnancy next time.

If miscarriage happens early on, then you often don’t need to have an operation (D&C) to clear things away. Nature will sort it out either when you are bleeding or at the next period. It is safe to start trying again once you feel emotionally ready.
