Cheryl insists there’ll be ‘no reunions’ for Girls Aloud in unearthed clip

Rumours have been swirling recently that Girl Aloud could be set to reunite for their 20th anniversary, with Nicola Roberts even hinting that the band could release new music.

However, if a recently unearthed clip is to go by, Cheryl would want no part of it as she hinted that a future reunion would be embarrassing for the girls after the age of 30.

In the throwback clip from 2006, Cheryl, 36, who was 22-years-old at the time and married to first husband Ashley Cole, insisted that there would be ‘no reunions’ as she joked: ‘can you imagine 30 odd year old ‘I’m just a love machine’ nah, no thanks!’

The 14-year-old video, taken from the girl band’s reality show Girls Aloud: Off the Record, shows Cheryl and then-husband Ashley walking their dogs.

And there, Cheryl made her feelings very clear about the idea of the five-piece, consisting of herself, Nicola, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding and Kimberly Walsh, possibly reforming in years to come.

Speaking at the time when the girls were at the peak of their fame, she told the camera: ‘There will be no reunions though, can you imagine 30-odd-year-old “I’m just a Love Machine” nah, no thanks!’

She continued: ‘I think it would be foolish to think that people haven’t thought about what they want to do after the band.

‘Just because, it is four years down the line now and realistically how long have we got? Another few year, if that.’

The mum-of-one went on to say that the girls, who disbanded in 2013, would call it a day if one was unhappy in the band and would not go on to slate one another should one of them quit in the future.

She added: ‘From the start we said if anyone is really unhappy or if the band goes downhill and nobody is buying the records then we will make a decision as a band to end it.

‘Not that somebody leaves or quits and then starts slagging each other off afterwards in autobiographies and all that.

‘I would like to think that we would all stay in contact and be friends.’

Cheryl, who split from Ashley in 2010, since went on to carve out a successful solo career with various stints judging on TV talents shows.

Meanwhile, the other ladies also embarked on their own solo careers with varying levels of success, while they also made several TV appearances on shows including Celebrity Big Brother, I’m A Celebrity and The Masked Singer.

It comes after Nicola, 34, recently revealed that the Sound Of The Underground hitmakers have ‘hundreds’ of unfinished songs.

Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper’s Wired column, she said: ‘There are hundreds of songs that have never been heard, verses and choruses in the vaults.

‘When you have recorded seven albums together there will be a lot of material that never got used. I am not sure if they will see the light of day, but I guess fans would like it.’

And while 14 years ago her pal Cheryl didn’t seem keen for a reunion, Nicola insisted that she’d be up for it herself.

She added: ‘I would love to get back with the girls, and us put on a show and just put it on for the fans really.’

Elsewhere, Nadine recently hinted that Girls Aloud could be set to reunite for their 20th anniversary in 2022.

The Irish singer, 34, hinted last month that the girl band could come together once more to mark two decades since they burst onto the music scene.

It’s well documented that things have not been entirely amicable within the band, with Cheryl, Nicola and Kimberly forming a close friendship, while Sarah and Nadine were distant from the trio.

However, Nadine has hinted that the girls have patched up their differences and are ready to reunite again.

Confirming that there’s been talks of a reunion, Nadine told The Sun: ‘There’s been loads of conversations and people now are getting in contact, like, ‘What do we do?’ It’s still early.’

While she said on Angela Scanlon’s Thanks A Million podcast: ‘I’m 34 years old so to think that I’ve been doing anything for 20 years is shocking, isn’t it?’

Nadine’s hint comes in contrast to her words earlier this year when she said it would ‘take a lot’ for the band to reunite for their 20th anniversary in 2022.

The Insatiable singer sat down with Hello! for a candid chat about reforming with bandmates, she said: ‘People are always asking if we’ll do something for our 20-year anniversary. It would be nice, but it takes so much – it’s like moving a mountain.

‘So many people are involved, and it would take a lot of planning and organising. I’m not thinking about that at the moment, but I’m definitely very fond of everything we’ve done, and it’s always really nice to support each other. We worked together for so long.’
