Britney Spears’ conservatorship has dominated the headlines this week following the release of the controverisal New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears.

The timing of the release was fortuitous as the 39-year-old pop star’s longrunning conservatorship case is heading back to court on Thursday.

Spears has been fighting for more autonomy in her life and has been trying to wrest control away from her father Jamie Spears, who has managed the conservatorship for over a decade.

Britney’s legal team will appear at a hearing on the conservatorship case in a Los Angeles court, however, the star is not expected to attend.

Her slate of pricey attorneys are attempting to convince a judge to permanently remove Jamie Spears as the sole conservator controlling her career, finances and estate. 

The pop princess has also been working to have the entire conservatorship lifted or loosened.

Late in the summer of 2020, Britney’s lawyers submitted paper work stating she was ‘strongly opposed’ to her father having control of her estate and finances, according to TMZ.

Instead the singer wished, at the time, for her temporary conservator Jodi Montgomery to take on the role permanently. 

Jamie was appointed as his daughter’s conservator in 2008 following her very public breakdown. However, last year, he stepped aside from the role due to ongoing health issues. 

Britney’s conservatorship has been back in the headlines following the release of Framing Britney Spears which shined a light on her infamous breakdown and the ensuing legal battle to successfully and safely manage her career.

While the the Toxic songstress hasn’t addressed the documentary directly, she used Twitter to seemingly suggest that there is much more to her story than what Framing Britney Spears provided. 

‘Remember, no matter what we think we know about a person’s life it is nothing compared to the actual person living behind the lens,’ she Tweeted. 

A principal motivation for the changes Britney is seeking in her legal status appeared to be her desire to no longer continue performing.

In November, a lawyer for the pop sensation told a court that Britney is scared of her father and is refusing to perform again until he is removed as her conservator.

‘My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father,’ Britney’s attorney Samuel D. Ingham told a judge during a hearing to determine whether another conservator should be appointed. ‘She also stated that she will not perform as long as her father is in charge of her career.’

The Circus singer has not performed live since October 2018 when she wrapped up the final legs of her Piece of Me Tour after concluding her Las Vegas residency on December 31, 2017.

In another tweet this week, Spears appeared to address those reports, insisting in a that while she loves being on stage, she is ‘taking the time to learn and be normal’ and to ‘enjoy the basics of everyday life’.
