Bridgerton The Musical: Fans of the drama take to TikTok to create songs for show’s pivotal moments 

Fans of Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton are taking to TikTok in droves to re-imagine the show as a musical.

The regency drama has been a hit with audiences since it debuted on Christmas Day and TikTokers have been joining forces in lockdown to create songs to accompany pivotal moments in the show.

#BridgertonTheMusical has already clocked up over 1.5 million views after singer Abigail Barlow shared a video singing from character Daphne’s perspective of her tangled relationships and search for love. 

Using TikTok’s unique Duet function creators have been able to sing along with Abigail’s original song, adding their own personal twist. 

Abigail has now shared 9 new new songs, including a piece from the perspective of Daphne and her husband Simon’s honeymoon.

She has also shared an original track and instrumental from the perspective of Penelope Featherington by West End star Carrie Hope Fletcher. 

Fans on the platform have also given their thoughts on potential costumes, production notes, and auditioning for the roles of Daphne and Simon.

Musicals on TikTok have exploded in popularity over the past year, with many fans mourning the loss of live theatre, using lockdown and time at home to reimagine classics. 

TikTok last year launched the Future Theatre Fund with the Evening Standard. 

The fund will provide opportunities for twelve emerging performers, who will each receive £10,000 from the Fund, managed and distributed by the National Youth Theatre, as well as professional support and mentoring to progress their careers in the theatre.

Bridgerton, which is based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling novels, follows the romance between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Rege-Jean Page), however there are seven more books following other siblings in the powerful family.

Following its success, the show has been tipped to become the next Downton Abbey with a second series on the cards.

An insider told The Sun: ‘With so much material to work with there’s every chance it could develop into multiple series.

‘And it’s fair to say it has an added edge that Downton didn’t have.’

They added that the show has been such a ‘hit’ that the cast, who were not widely known before it aired, will be able to ask for ‘bumper pay rises’ in series two.

The show’s creator Chris Van Dusen previously told Cosmopolitan that he’d love to make more episodes of the show.

He told the publication: ‘There are eight Bridgerton siblings [and] there are eight Bridgerton books. So in success I would love to be able to explore love stories and romances for all the Bridgerton brothers and sisters, of course.’

Phoebe also previously chatted about the show’s racy content as she explained how the ‘first-ever scene’ she shot for the series was with co-star Rege. 

Speaking to Grazia, she said: ‘My first-ever scene was in episode six, where Simon is going down on Daphne.

‘And it was so great, because it felt safe and fun: you choreograph it like a stunt, or a dance. It’s crazy to me that [an intimacy coordinator] hasn’t been there in the past.’

She added: ‘I love her [Daphne’s] coming-of-age story and her sexual awakening. I love seeing them female gaze and watching her figure it out for herself. She’s a late bloomer, but it’s not like she can google it.’

Meanwhile, Regé recently reflected on the most difficult scene to Netflix, saying ‘it’s not always the extreme things that are the hardest.’

‘I think everyone has these heightened emotional moments in them at all times; you’re just controlling it and keeping it in check. The hardest moments are the very, very subtle barbs and hurts over the dinner table,’ he said.

The actor continued: ‘When someone says something that you don’t get to blow up about, that you don’t get to cry about, you just have to take that sting right in the ribcage and express that through a flick of an eyebrow or through the way that you cut your peas.’

He, then, spoke of ‘a moment in the house of the Bridgertons where it’s ostensibly a quite calm, happy scene,’ but his character ‘really’ didn’t want to be there.

‘But, you can’t say that. The kids are there and they’re all happy and playing and being accepted in exactly the warm and loving family that Simon never had,’ he reflected. ‘And that is never explicitly mentioned in the script in that moment.’
