Black Panther director Ryan Coogler ‘couldn’t be happier’ to develop Wakanda TV series for Disney+

Just in time for Black History Month, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler signed a five-year exclusive TV deal with the Walt Disney Company.

The 34-year-old Independent Spirit Award winner will ‘develop new television series, including one based in the Kingdom of Wakanda for Disney+’ – according to Marvel.

‘We couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden, and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella,’ Ryan said in a statement.

‘We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms.

‘We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share.’

Coogler runs his production company Proximity Media with his wife Zinzi Coogler as well as Sev Ohanian, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis, and Peter Nicks. 

‘Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation,’ Disney executive chairman Bob Iger said in a statement.

Speaking of Black Panther, Coogler also produced Shaka King’s Fred Hampton biopic Judas and the Black Messiah, which premieres February 12 on HBO Max.
