Big Sky gets a full-season order on ABC expanding the first season to 16 episodes

ABC is expanded the first season of the hit drama series Big Sky, issuing a full-season order that amounts to 16 episodes.

The show was initially given a 10-episode order, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing most shows likely won’t get to the typical 22 or 24-episode order that they would in a typical season, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

While the show’s debut was decent, it has more than doubled its premiere total in multi-platform viewing, leading to the additional six-episode order.

While the show has been doing well in the ratings, it has been controversial as well, with the show facing criticism from Native American groups.

Several groups, including the Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council, Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana and Global Indigenous Council, sent a letter to ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke, executive director of corporate social responsibility David Ambroz, series executive producer Matthew Gross and series creator David E. Kelley.

The letter expressed their, ‘serious concerns of at best, cultural insensitivity, and at worst, appropriation, in respect to the soon-to-be premiered series’ in November.

Kelley responded in a statement last week, that, ‘our eyes have been opened to the outsized number of Native American and Indigenous women who go missing and are murdered each year, a sad and shocking fact.’

He added that they would work to ‘bring attention’ to the issue through the show, and now that they have six more episodes, they have more opportunity to do so.

Big Sky airs its fourth episode, entitled Unfinished Business, on Tuesday, December 8 at 10 PM ET on ABC.
