Big Brother Australia first episode a hit with challenge, outspoken contestants and elimination

Big Brother Australia returned to screens on Monday night after a five-year hiatus.

The Channel Seven reboot featured tears, tantrums, outspoken contestants, a gravity-defying challenge and a shock elimination all in the first episode.

Romance also began to blossom between Daniel Gorringe and Talia Rycroft as the first 12 housemates settled into the show’s new compound in Manly, Sydney.

It’s back! The first episode of Big Brother featured tears, tantrums, outspoken contestants, a gravity-defying challenge and a shock elimination

Kieran Davidson was the first housemate to arrive and was given a secret challenge by Big Brother. If he failed, the housemates’ bedroom would remain locked and they would all have to sleep outside.

The 21-year-old was tasked with giving each housemate a nickname as they entered. He also had to massage them and individually teach them a ‘secret handshake’.

Surprisingly, the videographer from Adelaide managed to pass the challenge with flying colours.

Perth-based events manager Angela Clancy proved to be the show’s biggest diva.

The feisty 38-year-old told Big Brother: ‘Honey, I’m home! It’s my house now. I’m residing in here, you’re out there, so it’s my house now.’

She then complained about the vegan food that had been laid on for the first night, asked for more options and gasped at the idea of rations.

'Bland': The group was told that Big Brother would provide them with basic food rations, but they would have to earn luxury items by winning challenges

‘No, no, no! Some of us don’t do budget,’ she yelled as housemate Marissa Rancan, 62, read out Big Brother’s basic food plan for the contestants.

‘Housemates are provided basic food rations for every day that they’re in the house. Whilst it is bland, it is more than enough food to get you through each day. They’ll also be pantry items available outside your rations,’ Marissa said.

In addition to rations, they were provided with the following pantry items: olive oil, salt and pepper, baking powder, yeast, butter and margarine.

Housemates will get the opportunity throughout the season to compete for money to buy luxury food items on top of their daily rations.

Meanwhile, Big Brother quickly set the housemates a gravity-defying challenge.

After stepping into the compound’s basement and discovering a huge metal frame with swings, Big Brother announced: ‘Each of you must secure yourself to a swing and then using only the power of momentum you must propel yourselves backwards and forwards, attempting to get enough speed and height to reach the top bar.

‘You’ll then place a ball on a shelf. The first housemate to successfully place five balls will win the challenge.’

Talia, 22, won and then started crying in the diary room as she had to nominate three housemates for eviction. She chose Kieran, Zoe George and Laura Kaiviti.

The rest of the housemates voted which of the three they’d like to leave the show, and Melbourne-based dancer Laura was eventually sent packing with six votes.

‘You all did it to me, so don’t apologise. It’s okay, don’t worry about it,’ she said as the group said their goodbyes.

Afterwards, Laura told Big Brother she was ‘very shocked’ by her elimination.

Earlier in the episode, sparks were flying between Daniel and Talia.

The former AFL player, 27, and blonde bombshell got flirty in the bathroom, and later shared a cosy chat before the bedroom lights went out.

However, Daniel’s wild snoring later that night may have put her off him.

Big Brother continues Tuesday at 7:30pm on Channel Seven
