Benedict Cumberbatch stuns fans by visiting a comic book shop dressed as his Marvel alter-ego Doctor Strange in unseen clip

He’s beloved by fans the world over for his role as Doctor Strange.

And Benedict Cumberbatch surprised a small number of his followers when he visited a comic book shop dressed as his Marvel alter-ego during filming for the blockbuster.

In a video tweeted by director Scott Derrickson, the actor, 44, paid a visit to a nearby shop while in character for the 2016 film, and delighted fans by replicating Dr Stephen Strange’s US accent.

Scott captioned the video: ‘Never before shown moment. While shooting in Manhattan right in front of a comic book store, I spontaneously suggested to Benedict that he go inside and he agreed.’

The clip showed Benedict heading into the Manhattan shop dressed as Doctor Strange, to the delight of its owner who happily shook his hand.

One staff member held up one of the Dr Strange comics to compare the resemblance, while Benedict asked if he could have a job there if the movie flopped at the box office.

Of course Doctor Strange went onto gross $677.7 million (£524 million) at the box office, and a sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is set for March 2022, though this remains in doubt due to the COVID-19 crisis. 

The owner jokes that he can work there if he puts on a US accent, which Benedict does with utter ease.

A brief glimpse of Benedict’s visit to the shop had been shared when the film was released four years earlier, but this was the first time fans got to see the moment in full.

Doctor Strange told the tale of a genius neurosurgeon who is drawn into the world of mystical arts after a car crash brings his medical career to a crashing halt, and eventually has to save the world from the villainous Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen).

The film also starred Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Benedict has since reprised his role as Doctor Strange in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
