Beau Ryan reveals his health battle after The Amazing Race Australia

Beau Ryan spent a few months travelling around Australia while filming Channel 10’s second season of The Amazing Race late last year.

And now the former AFL star has detailed a secret struggle he has faced since being back in Sydney.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph this week, Beau said: ‘I lost weight on the race and it’s slowly coming back, but I’m still looking a bit too lean.’

Beau, who prides himself on trying all the challenges the competing teams face on the adventure program, said his goal was to put on weight (approximately two kilograms) this year.

‘I like weights. I lose weight quickly, which is torture if you’re a rugby league player trying to gain weight, so I’m all about gaining muscle mass,’ he said.

Beau, who used to play rugby league for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and the Wests Tigers, said he has always struggled with maintaining muscle mass.

Slim: 'One of my goals for 2021 is to put on two kilograms,' he said. He continued: 'I lost weight on the race and it's slowly coming back, but I'm still looking a bit too lean'

Beau explained he usually eats a high-protein, high-fat diet which helps keep his energy levels high.

‘I eat a high protein and a high-fat diet. We burn a lot of calories in our house, especially trying to keep up with my son, Jesse,’ he joked.

Beau is now back hosting yet another season of The Amazing Race. Last month, he revealed he was genuinely scared for his life during some of the challenges.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph he said the show’s production staff ‘tested a lot of the challenges’ before contestants did them.

Before he took the plunge – Beau made farewell videos for his wife and children, just in case something went wrong, especially on challenges involving heights.

‘We had a social phone we used to record stuff to put out on TenPlay and social media before we do some of the challenges.

‘And I always did a farewell piece to camera for my wife and kids, like if something did happen to me and I didn’t survive the abseil or the cliff dive,’ he said.

He added: ‘But I was doing these challenges every second day so there were about 50 farewell videos all up. Lucky for me I didn’t have to use them.’

Earlier that month, it was revealed that Beau was forced to quarantine for two weeks before filming the show last year.

The official Instagram account for the series shared a video of the star admitting that isolation was ‘hard’.

In the clip, Beau lies shirtless on a hotel bed as he discusses the challenges of isolation.
