He’s the iconic Australian musician who has been enjoying a career renaissance thanks to the resurgence of his hit 1990’s single, The Horses.

And on Thursday, Daryl Braithwaite revealed a strange phobia as he gears up to release his first single in seven years, Love Songs, on Friday.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, the 71-year-old singer said: ‘Over the years I’ve had a bit of a phobia about studios.’

‘It’s a different technique and thing to performing live and doing gigs. But over the years I have started to like recording, it’s only taken me about two or three decades,’ he said.

Daryl added that he loves the ‘uncertainty’ of playing live and struggles with having to concentrate while recording.

He explained: ‘You don’t know your throat is 100 per cent, you don’t know how the people are going to react – you’ve got all these uncertainties. Whereas recording you’ve got to knuckle down.’

‘Over the last maybe 10 years I have accepted that, hey, maybe they are not that bad, you know. I guess because I hadn’t done it for a couple of years,’ he said of being back in the recording studio.

Love Songs will mark the Aussie legend’s first release in seven years following Forever the Tourist in 2013.

Speaking about the release of his new single, Daryl confessed he didn’t think he would be able to release music that people would actually hear.

The singer, who’s almost reached a 50-year career in the entertainment industry, recently had to go digital and sign up for social media accounts.

So far, he’s clocked up 2685 followers on Instagram, giving fans a rare insight into his private life.

Speaking about joining social media, he said: ‘Well, I’ve got the help of people at Sony Music, as well as my son Oscar who looks at me and rolls his eyes and says, “Dad, it’s so easy,” but it’s not that easy, let me tell you.

‘I’ve been dabbling with it for some years but it’s nice to see how it works – and it does work when you do it properly.’ 

In February, Daryl delighted fans when performed The Horses at Fire Fight Australia bushfire relief concert. 

He was also inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2017.
