The goalkeeper arrived at Old Trafford with high expectations following a successful spell at Inter Milan that saw him finish the Champions League with the most saves and most clean sheets.

He had big shoes to fill regarding the outgoing David de Gea, but has been heavily criticised for a number of performances, including his role in Bayern Munich’s goal at Old Trafford in midweek.

While he has received praise for his ability with his feet, Onana’s performances have left much to be desired so far this term when it comes to shot stopping.

The Cameroon international is set to depart United for a number of weeks to take part in the African Cup of Nations in January which will give him time to reflect on his time at the club so far, and, in an interview with Sky Sports, he has admitted that he needs to up his game at club level.

‘If I have to speak about my season so far for Manchester United, I am not happy because I know I can do much much better, I’ve done it and I know I will do it better than what is happening now,’ he said. ‘We are not facing a good moment. I hope things will change as soon as possible.

‘But listen, you want to tell me in six months the best goalkeeper in the Champions League last season can become the worst in the world? Nah.

‘Everything is temporary. I know it’ll be alright. If not today, it will be tomorrow, if not tomorrow, the day after tomorrow.’

United are preparing to take on Liverpool on Sunday as one of the biggest rivalries in England football continues at Anfield.

With Liverpool top of the league, many fear the worst for Erik ten Hag’s side, who are currently seventh in the league standings with seven defeats in 16 games this term.

Ten Hag has received criticism for his running of the United team this term, but Onana, who played under the Dutchman at Ajax before following him to Manchester, backed his manager.

‘We had a successful period with Ajax,’ he said. ‘We reached the semi-finals of the Champions League and played brilliant football from the back.

‘He’s a good manager. I like the way he works, the way he communicates with the players.’
