‘You’re a role model for other people that have to overcome incredible odds, so all I can say is keep punching.

‘You’re the man,’ Sly finished.

Nick has truly become a symbol of strength and resilience.

On Wednesday Amanda revealed that he had woken up from his medically-induced coma, during which he has faced a series of severe health conditions and setbacks – including having his leg amputated, and suffering two mini strokes.

However, she said she still feels incredibly positive in light of the news, telling Good Morning America anchor Michael Strahan on Wednesday morning: ‘I cannot express how happy I am.’

Amanda explained that Nick’s change in condition marks a huge milestone, having spent weeks listening to doctors tell her that a sign of mental response was the first step to starting his recovery.

‘They always end [our conversations] with, “We just need that mental status, we need to wake him up, we need him to wake up,” and it’s just been this heaviness that’s kind of held over us for this time,’ she explained.

So when Amanda received the news that her husband was finally showing signs of awareness, and responding to simple commands, she says she felt a huge weight lifted off her shoulders.

‘[On Tuesday] the doctor said, “I think we can officially say he is awake,” and that was just the best news you could hear,’ she said.

‘For the first time, he started following commands, which was a huge deal. If he answers a question with a “yes”, he looks up, and [if it’s] a “no”, he looks down. To finally hear the doctor say, “We’re seeing these early early signs but I think it’s happening,” was a huge sigh of relief.’

Looking ahead: Amanda admitted that Nick, 41, 'still has a very long way ahead', but she is feeling incredibly positive about the future

But while Nick’s change in condition has filled her with positivity, Amanda knows that her husband – and the family – still faces a steep uphill battle before the Bullets Over Broadway star is able to return home to his wife and their baby son Elvis.

‘We still have a very long way ahead of us, a long road ahead of us, but we’re on our way,’ Amanda shared.

Nick, who was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in the 2014 in the musical Bullets Over Broadway, first went to the ER on March 30 with a COVID-19 diagnosis.

Two days later, he was put in a medically induced coma and put on a ventilator, on which he still remains.

During the six weeks since then, Nick has faced a series of setbacks and complications, and last month he had to have his leg amputated after suffering from blood clots as a result of one of the machines he was put on to save his life.

In an Instagram post shared last week, Amanda detailed the many issues Nick has dealt with while in hospital, writing: ‘He went to the ER on March 30th and intubated on a ventilator on April 1.

‘Since then has he has suffered an infection that caused his heart to stop, he needed resuscitation, he had two mini strokes, went on ECMO, went on dialysis, needed surgery to removal an ECMO cannula that was restricting blood flow to his leg, a faciatomy to relieve pressure on the leg, an amputation of his right leg, an MRI to further investigate brain damage, several bronchial sweeps to clear out his lungs, a septis infection causing septic shock, a fungus in his lungs, holes in his lungs, a tracheostomy, blood clots, low blood count and platelet levels, and a temporary pacemaker to assist his heart.’

Days later, Nick began showing signs that he was waking up from his coma, with Amanda revealing that he first started responding to doctors on Sunday, her first Mother’s Day as a mom to Elvis, who will turn one this summer.

Throughout Nick’s time in hospital, Amanda has been sharing regular updates on his condition via Instagram – where she also started a social media campaign to spread positivity and awareness about the deadly dangers of the coronavirus.

Every day at 3PM PST/6PM ET, the former Rockette has urged people around the world to get up and dance to her husband’s song, Live Your Life, while using the hashtags #WakeUpNick and #CodeRocky.

She has also shared warnings to all young, fit, and healthy people that the virus affects everyone, no matter their age or their lifestyle, telling GMA’s Michael that both she and Nick simply ‘thought he was tired’ when he first started showing symptoms.

‘We have a man who is perfectly healthy, 41 years old, and we just thought he was tired. And then this is what has happened,’ she said.

Despite the battles that Nick has faced – and the struggles that lie ahead of him – Amanda says she is remaining positive, and is looking ahead to the day when she and her son Elvis are reunited with the Broadway actor.

‘I’m not going to let him leave my side,’ she told GMA. ‘I can’t wait to be reunited with him, I miss him like crazy, Elvis misses him like crazy, and we can’t wait to have him home.’
