Alanis Morissette discusses struggles with miscarriages and the importance of mental health: ‘At the end of the day there’s still that little light’

Alanis Morissette is a talented and iconic musician who is getting candid about motherhood and her eternal sense of optimism.

The Ironic hitmaker, 46, was a guest on a recent episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, in which she revealed that she suffered a ‘bunch of miscarriages’ between having her three children.

The artist, who released one of the top-selling albums of the 1990’s, is now mother to sons Ever, nine, and Winter, 10 months, as well as daughter Onyx, three.

‘We were chasing and just showing up and then surprises and then devastations and all of it,’ Alanis explained of her efforts to conceive with husband Mario Souleye Treadway.

The pair have been married since 2010.

In spite of the ‘devastations’ of their miscarriages, Morissette said she held fast to ‘hope and faith’.

‘I mean, I do trust,’ she told Dax and Armchair co-host Monica Padman. ‘I have this trust pilot light thing that keeps cooking along — even when there’s a torrential downpour it’s still flickering — of hope and faith and vision for something to work out, whatever it is.’

The almost lyrical way in which Alanis phrases it should come as no surprise – her upcoming album, Such Pretty Forks In The Road, so far looks to be just as insightful, biting and poetic as her ’90s classic Jagged Little Pill.

It’s her first album in eight years, but the first three singles pack a similar punch to Alanis’s stock material.

About the inevitable ups and downs, the Hand In My Pocket songstress has learned to lean on ‘that little light’ at the end of the tunnel.

‘I’m an optimist who will get depressed and cry, but at the end of the day there’s still that little light,’ she said on the podcast. ‘That little star of Bethlehem keeps dangling over there.’

She indeed has a lot to be optimistic about, too – in addition to her beautiful family, Morissette’s groundbreaking Jagged Little Pill became a Broadway musical last fall, with performances set to resume after coronavirus restrictions lift.
