Adam Levine apologizes for Maroon 5’s lackluster performance in Chile

Adam Levine has apologized after Maroon 5 were heavily criticized by Chilean fans for giving a disappointing performance at the Viña del Mar Festival on Thursday.

While concert-goers inside the Quinta Vergara stadium appeared to be enjoying the televised show, Levine appeared to be struggling to give the set his usual energy and viewers took to Twitter to express their frustration with the pop band.

Making matters worse, Levine was caught on camera complaining about the festival as he exited the stage, saying, ‘That was a TV show! … that was not a concert.’

Adam Levine has apologized for his lackluster performance with band Maroon 5 in Chile on Thursday at the Viña del Mar Festival

On Friday Levine posted a video to his Instagram stories where he apologized for the ‘unprofessional’ performance and explained that he was so focused on being his best that he let it impact how he was behaving on stage.

‘You know, being in a band you play a lot of shows, and I am so so excited about concerts and about being my best, and the band being our best, and being our best for you guys honestly,

‘You know, performing I take seriously, sometimes too seriously, and to be totally frank there were some things holding me back sonically last night and I let them get to me and it impacted how I was behaving on stage, which was unprofessional and I apologize for that.’

He continued, ‘Sometimes when those technical problems take place I zero-in and focus on singing because I feel like that’ll be the best way to put this thing out on TV for $60 million people, which is what that show was last night.

‘I struggled a lot and sometimes it’s really hard for me to mask the struggle. I did let you guys down and I apologize’

Levine ended his message by saying he was super excited about the band’s performance coming up in Santiago and promising that it will be the best of tour.

After the band’s 70 minute, 15-song set, fans were quick to express their disappointment on social media.

One viewer called the performance ‘lousy’ while another accused the band of being unprofessional.

‘Adam sounds awful and he doesn’t have the moves like Jagger at all,’ wrote a fan called Angelica from Nuevo, Chile.

The 40-year-old singer was accused of looking ‘reluctant, distracted and uncomfortable’, by Santiago’s La Tercera newspaper.

The band were also late on stage meaning that the presenters María Luisa Godoy and Martín Cáracamo had to awkwardly fill in the minutes before their arrival.

Before Levine spoke out, representatives for the band told Billboard: ‘Prior to their arrival in Chile, Maroon 5 was informed by their representatives about civil unrest in the country and an incident with Ricky Martin on route to the festival grounds from his hotel.

‘Despite this, the band insisted on going ahead and performing the show for their fans. As a result, Live Nation, the Viña del Mar Festival, and Maroon 5 made arrangements for additional private security and the welcome help of the Chilean Federal Police, PDI, as Maroon 5 wanted to perform for their Chilean fans in this time of uncertainty.

‘Maroon 5 took the stage on schedule and on time last night. They performed 70 minutes of their greatest hits to great acclaim. Unfortunately, during the performance, the band encountered numerous technical difficulties throughout the show, including monitor issues and with both of Adam Levine’s in ears.

‘It created a very difficult situation for the band to deliver their normal show. The band loves their Chilean fans. Maroon 5 has now moved on to Santiago de Chile for their headline show at Estadio Bicentenario de la Florida where they will play for 30,000 people, and then on to perform an additional 7 dates throughout South America. Maroon 5 thanks their fans in the country of Chile.’

The Viña del Mar International Song Festival is the longest-running music festival in Latin America.
