‘It is a matter for American voters’: Ita Buttrose is forced to deny she is a Donald Trump supporter after being trolled over her remarks on Studio 10

Ita Buttrose has denied she is a supporter of Donald Trump, following her comments on Studio 10 about the American president ahead of the election.

The ABC chair, 78, told The Australian on Tuesday that she did not support Trump or his Democratic Party opponent Joe Biden.

‘I have not stated any position on the U.S. election, as it is a matter for American voters,’ the Australian media doyenne said.

‘Of course I have my private views, and the outcome of this election will have far reaching ramifications for democracy in the U.S. and for the rest of the world – particularly countries like Australia who have such strong trade links with the U.S.’

Her neutral stance on the election comes after she was trolled on Twitter for appearing to endorse Trump during an appearance on Studio 10.

In September, she shared her thoughts on Trump’s comments about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

Trump had said of Meghan at a press conference: ‘I’m not a fan of hers. I wish a lot of luck to Harry, because he’s going to need it.’

Ita said on Studio 10 at the time: ‘I think he [Trump] probably said something that many people think.’

She also said Prince Harry should ‘butt out’ of American politics, a comment which did not go down well with new Studio 10 co-host Tristan McManus.

He disagreed with her, saying: ‘Everybody has a responsibility. This isn’t about American politics, because the decisions they’re making can affect the whole world.’

After denying she ever supported Trump, Ita gently poked fun at the president.

Taking aim at his bronzed glow, she told The Australian: ‘I think anyone should be careful with the amount of fake tan they use.’

Teasing: Since denying she has ever supported Trump, Ita also poked fun at the President. Specifically for his over-use of fake tan, telling the publication: 'I think anyone should be careful with the amount of fake tan they use'
